Time for Taiwan 2015-2016 Episode 8 Chulu Ranch, Taitung
Today I’m taking you to Taitung, where the countryside is beautiful. We’re going to Chulu Ranch, a place known for its delicious milk and where you can go off-roading on electric two-wheeled self-balancing vehicles. One great way to get around is by Taiwan Tourist Shuttles. We’re at the visitor center here and Chulu ranch is here. You can use an Easycard or iPass to pay for the bus fare, which ranges from NT$24 to NT$120 per ride. There’s a day pass that you can buy on the bus for NT$190, which is a good deal too. Taitung is on the southeastern side of Taiwan, and the East Rift Valley is the area between the central and coastal mountain ranges. Rice paddies, orchards and pastures make up most of the landscape that you see. This is the countryside, but it’s not boring at all . At Chulu Ranch, I can play until the cows come home. Chulu is most famous for its milk. Because only a limited amount is available, I get very excited when I can find milk from here in Taipei. But whether you’re a fan or just curious about how milk is produced, you can learn a lot here. How much milk does each cow produce a day? About 20 liters. How much grass does the cow need to eat to produce all that milk? Forty to 50 kilograms. How many meals do they need to take a day to finish all that grass? Three to four. Whoa. Warm milk. So what's the difference between feeding a cow grass and grains? The cows here are fed grass and supposedly grass is more nutritious, and that’s what makes the milk taste better. And this is my favorite part about coming here. The cows here graze on a pasture most of the day between meals. Notice the area the cows graze on is quite hilly. By making the cows graze on hilly areas, they have to walk up and down the hills, which makes them exercise. And exercise is good for health. Back in downtown Taitung, this is Tiehua Village, where you can do a little bit of shopping for handicrafts, get something to eat or drink and enjoy live music. Taitung is a soothing kind of place. Kilometers after kilometers of open space, fields, crops, mountains, rivers and hills. I really think that a bit of this once in a while is good for health. It’s beautiful, it's fun and helps cleanse the soul. You should come. The Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s East Rift Valley Bus will pick you up at Taitung Train Station, which is perfect if you’ve just gotten off the train. We were already in Taitung City, so we started from the Taitung Bus Station. The name for the bus station stop can be confusing. I think I saw “Visitor’s Center” and “Taitung Bus Station,” and both are the same stop. The local bus company that runs this line also has great deals on other packages, including lots of discounts at restaurants, hotels and shops, but all the information is in Chinese. There are a few stops between the train and bus station, Beinan Cultural Park is one of them. The park has lots of trees and grass to enjoy - a nice place for a picnic! I think Taitung is a place to stay for a few days, or even longer. Cost of living in Taitung is low, and you can ride around town on a bicycle, go a little further by bus, train or rental car. There are supermarkets, traditional markets, stores for electronics, a movie theater, hospitals…I see why people like to retire there. Chulu Ranch started as a demonstration farm, then was later rented out to a private enterprise, whose owner has always wanted a farm of his own. Mostly the farm produces tasty milk. In Taipei, you have to go to select supermarkets to get this milk and it’s only available in limited quantities, so when I can get my hands on a carton, I do get a bit excited. By the way, another farm whose milk I love is JJ Farm, who prides themselves on never feeding or injecting their cows antibiotics. I got to visit the farm a few years ago also for the show. If a cow gets sick at JJ, they give it herbal medicine and let the animal slowly recover without chemical medicine. JJ Farm's milk can be found in high end supermarkets under the “65C” brand, which come in a glass bottle. From what I understand, it’s the same thing as Dr Milker, which they supply for President. The milk is called 65C because the milk is pasteurized at 65 degrees Celsius, which saves some of the nutrients from being completely cooked and killed, in other words, it’s a more nutritious milk. The good thing about both Chulu and 65C milk is, they’re packaged at the farm then shipped. A lot of times, milk is shipped first, blended with other milk sources, then packaged. At Chulu Ranch, there are other farm animals like donkeys, goats, horses, chicken and pigs but they’re mostly for petting and looking at. Sometimes they manage to dig they way out of of their pen and come hang out with the guests. I think it’s good chance for small kids to get to see these animals up close and personal. For older kids and adults that don't want to grow up, you can take a Segway tour of the farm and ride over the rolling fields. It was my first time on a Segway, and it really wasn’t difficult to learn! I really enjoyed it. We also so a lot of cherry trees on the farm, and riding or walking through those must be really nice when the flowers blossom. They have some food at the ranch and it wasn’t bad, but I think it can be much, much better because they’re so close to sources of food. My suggestion for visiting the farm: take the tour they have, whether it’s on a golf cart or on a Segway. It’s a lot more interesting if you hear the story of the farm and know what you’re looking at. After Chulu, we stopped by Luye, where they hold the hot air balloon festival every year. Recently a hot air balloon flight school was started nearby. Hopefully we’ll get to visit them one day. Back in downtown Taitung, Tiehua Village is always a nice place to stop by at night because of the music events they have. On the weekends, there’s a market where people come to sell handicrafts (some modern, some traditional), produce and food. I got a cute little handmade bag for my mom there once. Big O Pizzeria next to Tiehua Village is not bad. It’s pricey, but the food is pretty good and it’s a nice place to have some beer, wine and enjoy a nice conversation with friends. We stayed at Hoya, a hotel chain that has been very kind to us over the years. Their Taitung city hotel opened in the last year I believe, and it’s clean, comfortable and convenient. They have bicycles you can borrow to ride to Tiehua Village, or to anywhere else in the city.

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 7: Buddha Memorial Center Kahohisung2015-2016年「台灣好好玩」第七集:高雄大樹 佛陀紀念館Transcript 文字稿:To achieve peace, some people prepare for war and some for transcendence. Let’s explore the latter today. I want to show you Fo Guang Shan’s Buddha Memorial Center, where people don’t go to pray, but go to get to know about Buddhism. The Buddha Memorial Center is in Dashu, Kaohsiung. So we’re going to take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, Dashu Line. An good way to do it would be to take the Kaohsiung MRT to Dadong Station and get on the shuttle from there. Right now we’re at Dadong here and we’re going to take the shuttle down to here, the Buddha Memorial Center. You can buy a day pass for the Dashu line on the bus for NT$30, an unbelievable price. This is the Buddha Memorial Center, and it’s free to get in, I usually try to donate what I can at these places, because donations help keep the doors open. The memorial center is quite spacious, so be prepared to walk. This is called a memorial center, but perhaps the most interesting bit is the museum, that thing back there. And on both sides of the path to the museum, there are these Chinese pagodas. They are a traditional type of architecture, not made for people to live in, but for people to worship in. Buddhism is based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha, also known as the Buddha, who lived between the 4th to 6th century BCE. He was born Siddhartha Gautama, a prince, and was said would become either a great king or a great monk. His father the king was worried that his son would end up the latter, so hid all forms of suffering from him. But one day when Siddhartha snuck out of the palace, he witnessed old age, sickness and death, things that saddened him and put him on the path to seek and later to share the way of enlightenment. This is the Buddha’s relic, one of his teeth. Some people come out here especially to see this. The way I see Buddhism and the process of enlightenment is, you study and learn and understand. Twenty-six… And meditate to transcend and detach. There are several ways to meditate. Some do it by sitting quietly, some people by making repetitive motions like practicing kung fu at Shaolin Temple, some do it by making and drinking tea. Today I'm going to do it by transcribing sutra. I have a hard time writing Chinese, but they make it easier here for you by giving you these very, very short verses to trace. They say transcribing helps you meditate, it gives you merit, and to me, I’m learning how to write Chinese. So I guess this is killing three birds with one stone. Well, maybe not killing. Catching three birds with one stone. On the way back to downtown Kaohsiung, if you still have a little bit of time left, you can stop by the Old Railroad Bridge Wetlands. It’s kind of pretty there, and theres a really old tile factory next to it that is quite cool. There’s a bit of DIY to do there too. 這裡有DIY可以玩喔~Some of the kilns are still fired by wood, and the combination of shadow and light from fire and from the sun makes this place wonderful for taking pictures. But in addition to tiles, they also make everyday items for the home. 除了建材,他們還有一些很不錯的家用產品喔~These coasters with traditional Chinese motifs, I’ve seen them in design shops and department stores. And this is a soap dish in the shape of a washboard, that’s another two birds with one…nevermind. It’s DIY time! To me, working with my hands is a form of meditation too. If you don’t count location scouting, this is my first time in Dashu and in the Buddha Memorial Center. And I'm really happy that we got to make this trip because I’ve always been curious about Buddhism. This time, I learned a little bit about the religion, about meditation, achieving inner peace and facing my fears. So I think it’s been quite educational. I’m really happy. You should come. On this trip, we visited the Buddha Memorial Center and San He, an old tile factory. I really enjoyed the museum because I learned a lot about Buddhism, which is something I’ve been curious about, and also had fun at San He Kiln, which has giant kilns that you can walk into, and watch the craftsmen work with the tiles and kilns up close. They have a variety of DIY courses there, and I really enjoyed making a ceramic soap dish that I converted into an ashtray at the request of my partner and good friend Charles. The old railroad bridge was kinda cool, but I wish they left the original rustic, oxidized color instead of painting it grey. Now it just looks dirty and dusty. If you are big on trains and photography, the old railroad bridge and the marsh area by it make some nice pictures at sunrise and at sunset. We stayed at Howard Plaza Kaohsiung, which has lots of noisy tourists, but the rooms are very quiet and comfortable, and the breakfast buffet is good. It’s an old hotel, but the service is good and you feel the effort they are putting into making the place better. I like that. On a more personal note, my mom practices Taoism and Buddhism (as do most other people in Taiwan), my dad follows along because he says it doesn’t hurt to, and from when I was little, I kind of just went through the motions. I didn't have much of an understanding of anything, just that there seemed to be lots of beings to pray to, from ancestors to gods, and lots of festivities throughout the year, honoring both the dead and the immortals. In junior high school, I attended a Catholic school and the impression that this religion left me was, you listen do what the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and his messengers tell you to do, or you will get sick, die and go to hell. In graduate school, I lived with my godmother, who is a Buddhist and goes through the rituals of lighting incense and reciting mantras every day. Our apartment smelled and sounded like a temple in the mornings and evenings, but a flower shop the rest of the day (we had lots of beautiful, fresh cut flowers almost all the time). Because it was the family activity, I kind of went through the motions too. I tried to believe, but in the end I wasn’t sure I did. I wanted to find out more for myself. Maybe I have a “I’m lost” face, because once in a while, someone from some religion would try to come save me by shoving their religion down my throat. That always makes me want to vomit all over their shoes. I’ve met a lot of crazy ones who are so caught up in the rituals and written words that they don’t bother to learn or to think about the spirit of the original teaching. In my late 20’s I started becoming interested in learning about Buddhism because it seemed more open minded and peaceful than some of the other religions I’ve encountered. I’m not a Buddhist, and perhaps I may never be one, but learning about its origins and its ideology has been interesting. I’m not big on mantras or on worshipping anything or anyone, but I particularly like how Buddhism teaches you to through meditation, face inevitable negative emotions and physical suffering. You try to understand it, accept it, and let it go. It’s been helpful. ——————————Links 連結:Buddha Memorial Center 佛陀紀念館 http://www.fgsbmc.org.twTaiwan Tourism Shuttle Dashu Line 台灣好行大樹線 http://www.taiwantrip.com.tw/Besttour/Info/?id=44San He Tile Kiln 三和瓦窯 http://www.sanhetk.com.twKaohsiung Howard Plaza Hotel 高雄福華飯店 http://kaohsiung.howard-hotels.com.tw——————————Accessories 配件:Shirt: kotipesä http://www.kotipesa.comWatch: Martian摩絢錶 http://www.martianwatches.com.twShoes: RucolineHat: Beams

To achieve peace, some people prepare for war and some for transcendence.

Some of the kilns are still fired by wood, and the combination of shadow and light from fire and from the sun makes this place wonderful for taking pictures. But in addition to tiles, they also make everyday items for the home.

These coasters with traditional Chinese motifs, I’ve seen them in design shops and department stores.

Michella's notes
That wasn’t there before the war. C: You know Michella, I’m really glad they restored this building and reopened Hayashi Department Store. It would have really been a shame to just let it die. M: I agree, I’m quite happy about it reopening too. And the shopping inside - I really enjoyed that. C: The new hat suits you well. 謝謝~C: You know what? I’m really looking forward to coming back here again, and hopefully discovering more old buildings brought back to life. So you should come! ——————————In this special episode, my buddy Cedric Jouarie and I visited Tainan’s Hayashi Department Store. We got on the red line bus at Tainan train station and got off at Hayashi, which was about two stops down. Because it was so close, the bus fare was free, but you do need to tag on and off the bus with an Easycard or iPass.Hayashi’s a pretty place with history and design. The building really stands out in the midst of other structures in the area. Because it’s restored and from a different period, one long ago and when people were spending money to enjoy themselves, there’s a classy feel to it.In terms of historical artifacts, a couple of cabinets from when it first opened is now being used again, the old elevator door, machine gun posts, etc are on display by the cafe upstairs. Bullet holes from air raids during WWII, and the Japanese shrine and torii are left for you to look at on the roof.So what can you empty your pockets on when you go? For starters, right before you go into the department store, there is a Japanese tea/ice-cream take-out shop. Cedric’s green tea ice-cream is from there. It looked really good and I really wanted one but our director Charles said, “No, Cedric gets the ice-cream.” Whaaaaat? Anyway, on the first floor are mostly dried foods and sauces from around Taiwan, most of them quite tasty and have a long shelf life. Upstairs you’ll find bags, clothing and items for I think the 20-35 years old crowd. Lots of items made from canvas, lots of products heavy on industrial design, some handcrafted everyday items. A lot of the things are really fun to play with and look at. It felt like shopping at Eslite. I bought a hat for myself. They said it was made of “antique fabric,” which sounded really cool at first, but I realized it’s just a fancy word for “old and unused,” and I think too many hands had touched and played with it because it was starting to get a little soft at the top. But it was the last one and I liked it, so I still ended up bringing it home. Overall, Hayashi is a great place to find gifts for young people with an eye for design. You should come!

C: Yeah. Let’s ride the elevator! Let’s ride the elevator!

M: Forever young.

C: Yes. Get out of the way.

C: Eighty-five years ago was the Japanese occupation, right?

M: Yeah.

C: No wonder this place has a Japanese-European feel to it. But has this place been open all this time? I’ve never heard of it before coming here today.

M: Me either.

C: Oh come on.
C: Shall we?

M: Yeah, let’s go up this way. This is one of the machine gun posts.

C: The same as what we saw downstairs.

M: Yeah. Pretty cool, huh?

C: You can see the bullet holes.

M: There are some bullet holes, really obvious bullet holes, but a lot of the tiles came apart.

C: Ah yeah that’s the shrine here.

M: And that’s another machine gun post.

M: Thanks.

C: You know what? I’m really looking forward to coming back here again, and hopefully discovering more old buildings brought back to life.

So you should come!

In this special episode, my buddy Cedric Jouarie and I visited Tainan’s Hayashi Department Store. We got on the red line bus at Tainan train station and got off at Hayashi, which was about two stops down. Because it was so close, the bus fare was free, but you do need to tag on and off the bus with an Easycard or iPass.

Hayashi’s a pretty place with history and design. The building really stands out in the midst of other structures in the area. Because it’s restored and from a different period, one long ago and when people were spending money to enjoy themselves, there’s a classy feel to it.

In terms of historical artifacts, a couple of cabinets from when it first opened is now being used again, the old elevator door, machine gun posts, etc are on display by the cafe upstairs. Bullet holes from air raids during WWII, and the Japanese shrine and torii are left for you to look at on the roof.

So what can you empty your pockets on when you go?
