Sound check disaster

No, it wasn't me. This time, it was a TVBS anchor. During a sound check, the audio technician left the mic hot, and the anchor's comments on former president Chen Shuibian, who is being prosecuted for money laundering and corruption, was aired.

From Taiwan News:
The anchor called the former president a “madman” and said he should “spit out the money” and “go eat excrements.”

One can never be too careful when there is a camera and a mic around. You never know if it's hot or if it's recording...

Here's FTV's report on it.

Poor dog. :(

Happy anniversary, Daniel & Quyen!

Finally got around to organizing pictures from Daniel (brother) and Quyen’s (sister-in-law) wedding last year. Here are just a few, there are many more, which you can view as a slideshow here here and here. There are photos from the Sacramento wedding and images from the Taipei reception. You can get a glimpse of how Taiwanese wedding receptions are held here. Happy 1-year anniversary, Daniel and Quyen!

Whew

Enjoying a break that seemed to take forever to get here. Although it’s only for a day, for once I have no place I need to be, and I am spending it at home, in my pajamas, with my hair tucked behind my ears and my bangs clipped to the top right side of my head.

This is going to be a very good DVD’s and laundry day. I also hope to catch up on some emails and clean out my computer, because it’s about to explode from holding too many pictures and memories (no pun intended).

Speaking of pictures, I keep forgetting to send to Ann the ones that she took with my camera during dinner at L’Idiot, Jenny’s family’s new restaurant. I don’t remember the food that well, because we were talking so much. I’m sure the Tequila Cosmopolitan that Fudy started me off with before dinner and the Earl Grey whisky that came later didn’t help with the memory. I remember the tofu ice cream and that it was worth another visit, though!

Tainted powdered milk

I've been reporting on the powdered milk from China that is suspected to be tainted with melamine. The story's still developing, which is exciting, but aside from the case itself, I wonder how long we'll get to report on it before everyone gets bored of it. Not long, I'm guessing. It started late at night on 12 Sep. Let's see how long it lives...

Tomorrow, I'm going to see if I can follow up on the two bakeries in Taipei that returned bags of powdered milk that were not the actual suspect products from China. One was an unmarked bag and the other had blue and white packaging was from the same distributor but was from a factory in Ukraine, rather than China. They looked very different from the plain brown bags with green lettering that were very publicly sealed and confiscated the first two days the story broke out. Somehow I don't think I'm going to be very successful in my try. Investigative reporting for TV news isn't that common in these parts, and I'm sure there is a good reason for it. Will the reason given to me be "sorry, we're understaffed, and the chances of finding answers and having images for it are slim," or "good idea, but our priority is to keep an eye on (ie harshly criticise) the government right now." I'm not being cynical, just realistic and keeping my expectations low.

Expectation management - the key to avoiding disappointment.

It's been a long day - 13 hours of almost non-stop trouble. Good night.

On the bullet train to Tainan

Filming Tainan travel feature this afternoon. Going to focus on historical sites and tasty eats. Quite tired from working day and night shifts at the same time, but finally used to it.
