What a morning

Shinki

Seediq travels

Have you seen the award-winning movie "Seediq Bale" yet? I saw the first part and really liked it. Looking forward to the second, although I hear it's even more gory.

Canon Kiss X3
EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Photomatix Pro
Aperture

A few weeks ago, we did a travel piece that's somewhat related.

Here it is, in English and in Chinese.

The movie "Seediq Bale" has recently brought much awareness to the Seediq tribe and its culture. Practically just about anything Seediq these days is a topic of interest, including the hot springs in which they used to soak.

Li Ji-tian,Seediq Expert:
The Seediq lived in Renai Township. Nantou has the highest hot spring density in the country, and many are here in Renai. We have carbonic acid springs here.

Following a nice hot bath is a tasty meal made from very simple ingredients.

Li Ji-tian,Seediq Expert:
Food in those days was very simple. They ate whatever that the rivers and mountains provided.
If they caught a bore, they'd trade it with people at the bottom of the mountain for salt, and salt was the only seasoning they had. At that time, there was no refrigerator either, so when they caught a bore, they'd salt it to preserve it. That's why there is a lot of salted bore in their cuisine, and also shrimp and freshwater fish.

During the Japanese occupation, the Seediq decided to fight and to take back their dignity and sacred hunting grounds. One day, Mona Rudao, a Seediq chief launched a brutal attack.

After a second incident, there were less than 300 Seediq tribespeople left, and all of whom were then relocated to an internment camp.

If you're looking for a bit of history and culture to go with a hot spring trip, Nantou's Renai Township will not disappoint.

Saturday breakfast

Good morning! Having breakfast right now in between newscasts. How do you like my outfit today? I feel like a cute little schoolgirl.

I usually have a two-part breakfast of convenience store rice balls on Saturday. One at 0430 and one at 0900. My favorite flavors are salmon, salmon roe, codfish roe and o-inari-san related items.

This is the travel feature we are airing this weekend.

This is the first of a series of pictures from Miss Ongg's concert with Evergreen Symphony Orchestra and other artists in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. The concert took place 11-12 November 2011, but these photos are from the 12th.

You can follow Miss Ongg on her Facebook page. These are all pictures that have already been published there.

I had only 2 lenses to work with:
EF 100mm F2.8 L macro IS USM
EF 35mm F1.4 L USM
and a Kiss X3 body, but I think I did OK!

Kind of proud of myself, actually!

More to come later!

Here is the news story from the concert and a preview for the re-airing of her documentary on FTV.

Dangerous words

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onhWeCX-plQ

Working hard

Naps help when we're working hard!

I sleep with my chin on a towel when I have to anchor because my seat back isn't tall enough for me to lean back or to use a neck pillow. If I put my head down on the desk, I will have to wake up earlier to go get my make-up fixed.

Napping like this is uncomfortable, but it keeps me from sleeping for too long and ending up groggy. Works well!

Well Liao, my coworker, took these pictures and was probably laughing his head off but I was so deep in sleep, maybe dreaming of what dessert will be at lunch later, that I didn't even stir. Embarrassing but pretty funny, wouldn't you say? Thank you, Well!

Packages 包裹

I have the most interesting viewers.

Received this in the mail last week.

To: Anchor Michella Jade Weng, Buddha
From: XXX, YYY temple in Nantou County

Religious readings, in a medicine bag from the hospital. It was sticky, too.

The person gave me two sets. On one of them, he left a note saying, “Please give this to Buddha Bai Bingbing. I could not reach her myself.”

Omitofo.

But also on the same day, I received a box of brown sugar from the family up in Alishan. That was so sweet of them. :)

Mouse

New look 新造型

Managing director: Why do you look so DIFFERENT when you're anchoring? You don't look like yourself.
Me: Yes, I know. People keep asking me, is that...your aunt?
MD: You look so old and so not like you during other times. You normally look so much like XXX but when you're anchoring... Why?
Me: ...maybe the hair and make-up?
MD: Why is it you don't look like XXX when you're anchoring? What's the problem?
Me: ...maybe the hair, make-up and wardrobe are different and done by other people? (I have almost no control over any of the these three things)
MD: You look so much like XXX off screen.
(she's starting to sound like a broken record)
Me: mm hm...
MD: It's time you get a new look. Give it a try. It may bomb, but that may not be a bad thing either. You can even shave your head. It would make a big impression.
Me: HM?!
MD: It's OK, it's about time you change your look anyway. If it doesn't work out, we'll try something else.
Me: (not about to shave my head) You mean you want me to look more like XXX when I anchor?
MD: Yes, give it a try.

So I'm getting a new look. Let's hope it doesn't get any worse. I don't think it can. One of my coworkers already called me "阿桑," so maybe it can't get any worse. The only people around here that get called 阿桑 are the old ladies that clean for us. Well, and me too when I'm anchoring.

"Why have you been looking the way you don't want to look all this time?" you ask. A sempai once told me, "Don't get involved with make-up and wardrobe. If you try to make changes and the MD doesn't like what she sees, even if it's not your problem, even if it's not a problem at all, all the blame can be placed on you. So protect yourself and don't worry about how you look, at least for now." So I try to keep my mouth shut.

The most puzzling thing to me is why the hair lady has to pull hair from the back of my head forward, like how some men like to pull their hair from one side to the other to cover the top that is bare. I keep telling her, "But I'm not bald..." On screen when I don't turn my head, you can't really tell what's going on, but when I'm walking around the office, people see a head that is flat in the back and has a 90 degree angle where the back and the top meet. It's like I'm straight out of the Conehead movie, except I'm a Squarehead. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but only a little.

Not anchoring this week because I'm on the vampires/wherewolves shift, but I should be back next Saturday morning. Stay tuned!
