I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to row, cycle, and travel. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. Today we’re going to start at Dongshan Train Station, cycle along Dongshan River to Dongshan Water Park, then take a boat to the Center for Traditional Arts where you can get a glimpse of what life and culture in Taiwan was like in the last century. But first we need a bike. You can rent one right outside the station. There are bike paths on both banks of the river, and it’s a really easy ride. From the train station to the Dongshan River water park, it's about 3 km. It might sound counterintuitive, but I think you should slow down so you don’t miss the scenery. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see crews rowing up and down the river. This is where the national rowing team and local crews train. How envious that the don't have to worry about fishing boats, yachts and dredging barges like we did in southern California. Yilan is in northeastern Taiwan, separated from the greater Taipei area by mountains. So as one story goes, a long, long time ago before the government and law enforcement made their way here, this was a pirate hangout. The other people that lived here were the Kavalans, and indigenous tribe. Dongshan River and its resources attracted early settlers. Now its bicycle paths attract travelers. The ferry ride to the Center for Traditional Arts is NT$75 and about 15 minutes long. The Center for Traditional Arts is a fun place and nostalgic for some people too. In addition to looking at traditional architecture, you can also see how craftsmen make things like calligraphy brushes, dragon beard candy, tops that spin, those kinds of things. This is a restored san he yuan, a traditional house that usually faces south. Oftentimes there's a pond in front of san he yuan's. The pond is not only decorative, but serves a function as well. When the summer wind blows from the south and the air passes over the pond before it enters the house, it gets cooled down by the moisture. Natural air conditioning! There are rooms on three sides of the san he yuan, and in the middle is a courtyard. Behind the courtyard, right in the center is the main hall. This is where ancestors and gods are worshipped, and where important guests are received. The kitchen is on the east side, so the sunlight can shine through early in the morning when breakfast is prepared. The bathroom, which had no plumbing in the old days, is to the west, to keep the stench and germs as far away from the kitchen as possible. The head of the household lives right by the main hall, which is close to the center of the house, and this symbolizes the center of power. The sons live on the east and on the west wings. What I find especially interesting is the relationship between the sisters in law in Taiwanese is called dang sai a, which literally means east and west. I like the Dongshan River area. It’s fun and it brings back a lot of nice memories for me. In college I was on the rowing team, where I very like spent more time and energy, rather than on my studies. But I think I turned out OK. But anyway and coming here and riding along the river, watching the calm, glassy surface is just so peaceful and soothing. Maybe I should just picnic here next time. That would be nice. You should come! The path along Dongshan River is beautiful. I remember seeing at least one old bridge and it was quite nice. Because you have to return the bike where you borrow it (at least that was the case when we were there), I think it’s better if you spend a day cycling around and have a picnic, or hang out at Dongshan River Park (which has pools and water slides in the summer), and budget a whole other day for National Center for Traditional Arts. You can also move the park itinerary to the second day too. The ferry ride to CTA is nice. The boat is really cool as it’s not only solar powered, the height of the roof on the boat is also adjustable, and it comes down before passing under the bridge. We rented a bike from a shop across the street from Dongshan Station. They have a good variety of bikes, including tandem, kids, electric and electric power assist bikes. I got a Giant power assist bike and Charles my partner got a Giant electric bike. Look at all the stuff we have on us! This kind of reminds me of the Indian military motorcycle acrobatics show. We ate at 小可愛米粉羹 a couple of times. We had the thick noodle soup and the fried tofu skewers. They were pretty good! UAV: 3DR Solo http://www.3drobotics.com

Transcript

This is Dongshan River in Yilan and I want to show you what you can do around here on a bicycle.

I'm Michella.

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 10: Cycling Sun Moon Lake2015-2016年「台灣好好玩」第十集: 日月潭鐵馬遊Transcript 文字稿:This is Sun Moon Lake, one of my favorite place in Taiwan, and I’m going to show you today why it’s such a wonderful area to cycle in. I'm Michella. I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to row, cycle, and travel. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. You can bring your own bike to Sun Moon Lake, or you can rent one here. There are several bike rental shops, but this one is my favorite so far - they have a nice selection of bikes, all in proper shape. The service is great and they’ll even give you bragging rights by way of this certificate after you finish the round-the-lake tour. I’ve chosen a bike, similar to the same one that my dad has at home, and so off we go! We started near the Shuishe visitor center, and we're going to go clockwise around the lake. Going this direction allows you to view the lake without the road and oncoming traffic getting in your way. The round-the-lake route is about 30km long, and most of it is quite easy. There are a few spots where you might want to run over the head of whoever that suggested you come out on a bike, but the rest is usually pretty level and pleasant. Overall, the ride is incredibly enjoyable. There are quite a few points of interest around the lake, and this is one of them: Wen-Wu Temple, a Taoist temple. Wen has to do with literature, and Wu has to do with war. The main deities here are Confucius, a scholar god, and Guan Gong and Yue Fei, who are warrior gods. A lot of people turn to religion when they seek guidance. This is what some people do when they come to a temple. First you’re supposed to introduce yourself to the gods that you wish to seek advice from, you say your name and tell hi or her where you live. Then you ask your question, shuffle the lot sticks and pick the one sticking furthest out. These are labeled by number. Next you cast the moon shaped lots to ask if you’ve picked the right lot stick. If one is facing up and the other is facing down, then this is the right one. If not, then you go back and start over from the lot stick picking step until you get the one that's meant for you. The answer will come in the form of a poem, and at this temple, the poems are translated into English. I was number 88 so this is my lot explanation. Deciphering the cryptic poem and what it means to you is like getting your question answered by more questions, but at least it’s not in Chinese! This is why I chose an electric power assisted bicycle. It makes going uphill a piece of cake. I’m not talking about myself, but oftentimes lazy people are also smart people. The views around the lake are amazing. They’re incredibly dramatic. At dawn, the fog, the mountains and the lake look like a scene out of a Chinese painting. In some places during the day, you can imagine commercials being filmed, or movies being shot there. It’s really beautiful. This 30km route has been voted one of the best places to cycle in Taiwan and in the world as well. Every year around October and November, there is a Come! Bikeday carnival and a fireworks and music festival. During this period, there are competitive races and fun races to take part in, and lots of entertainment, so that’s a great time to visit, but any other other time is just as nice too. My dad who loves to cycle has been wanting to come here for ages, so I think I’m going to get to return here again soon. I never get tired of Sun Moon Lake. You should come! This is Sun Moon Lake, one of my favorite place in Taiwan, and I’m going to show you today why it’s such a wonderful area to cycle in. I'm Michella. There are lots of bike/pedestrian paths, and some of them are right on the water, which is really special and quite beautiful. This time we explored Wen-Wu Temple, which has explanations of the lot stick poems in English! There's also a lot drawing machine, but I find the old fashioned ones much more interesting. To get to Sun Moon Lake, you can take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle from HSR Taichung Station, drive or hire a taxi. If you don’t bring your own bike, you can rent one at Sun Moon Lake. I highly recommend Giant, which has a shop there that sells and rents bikes. The service is generally good and there is a huge variety of bikes to choose from. There are quite a few ups and downs and for people that don’t normally cycle very hard, I suggest renting an electric power assist bike to help you through the hills. We stayed at Bamboo Rock Garden a new BOT hotel. It’s basic but clean and comfortable. I wouldn’t mind staying there again. :) Actually, we tried booking it for our upcoming trip but there was no availability. There aren’t that many rooms there, so they sell out quickly, unfortunately for us. They also have decent, affordable dinners, which I think is a rare combination in those parts. Come! Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 10: Cycling Sun  Moon Lake

Transcript

This is Sun Moon Lake, one of my favorite place in Taiwan, and I’m going to show you today why it’s such a wonderful area to cycle in.

I'm Michella.

Gear 器材:

Michella's notes

Every time I go to Sun Moon Lake, I tell my brothers who live in California, “we have to cycle there together!” They love to cycle, and I'm sure they will love cycling at Sun Moon Lake.

We stayed at Bamboo Rock Garden a new BOT hotel. I stayed in a handicap accessible room. The hotel is quite basic but clean and comfortable. I wouldn’t mind staying there again. :) Actually, we tried booking it for our upcoming trip but there was no availability. There aren’t that many rooms there, so they sell out quickly, unfortunately for us. They also have decent, affordable dinners, which I think is a rare combination in those parts.

If you get a chance to go to Puli, there’s a velo taxi service and a nice hot pot place. It’s slightly pricey, but you will probably walk away very full and satisfied.

With fresh water from the river, quick access to the ocean, mountains nearby for more food and other resources, this was a good place to settle and so the first village in northern Taiwan was supposedly here in Bali. At first I wondered why when people came to northern Taiwan, they came from the northwestern coast, rather than the northeastern coast. It turns out that most people came to Taiwan by boat from nearby continents, and the closest continent is to the west. To the east is the Pacific Ocean. The Austronesian people came here first, thousands of years ago. The Han Chinese came in the last few centuries. Fights over resources broke out between the Chinese and aborigines once in a while, and casualties would occur. The dead who had family in Taiwan were buried by their loved ones, and those that did not were taken here, a mass burial site. This is where the John Does found on land were buried. And by the way, this is also where the Spanish built a fort, between these five banyan trees. So what about unnamed corpses found on the water? They were buried right around here. In Chinese tradition, people pray not only to gods, but to the dead as well, asking for peace, good health, fortune, etc. People felt that their prayers to the John and Jane Does here seemed to come true more often and so decided to build a temple here. During the Qing dynasty, this was a very busy port area and there were several trade companies here, 13 to be exact. People came to know this as the place with 13 companies. Thirteen in Chinese is “shisan,” and companies is “hang.” And there you have Shihsanhang. This used to be an archaeological dig site, now it’s a museum. The museum building design itself is quite interesting. It’s in the shape of a ship, symbolizing the vessels that early settlers came on. The entrance to the museum is down that way, underground. So shall we go and dig for some history. The earliest artifacts found at this site was from about 1,800 years ago. There were a lot of fish bones found in garbage areas, meaning people that lived here ate quite a bit of fish. And by the wear and tear of the shoulder bones, archaeologists also concluded that people rowed a lot. I lived across the river over there in Danshui with my parents for a year and never knew that this is where civilization started in northern Taipei. I thought it would be Monga or Dadaocheng, which are near downtown Taipei. Such an interesting discovery for me! And the temples that worshiped unnamed corpses was a cool bit as well. My parents still live there in Danshui, and sometimes I ride here with my dad, either across the red Guandu bridge or via the ferry. It's lively, there’s lots of food here, and it’s a nice, leisurely ride. A word of advice: make this trip on a weekday. You should come. The first thing that comes to mind is, cycle in Bali a weekend or holiday at the risk of losing your sanity. If you must go on a day that most people have off, try to do it very early in the morning, otherwise you will very likely end up walking your bike the whole way through because there are simply so many people out there. I rented my bike from Giant, which is always a safe choice. You have to go a little further down, past all the stands and other bike rentals, a 5-10 minute walk from the pier. There’s a free app (in Chinese only) on iOS and Android called “Fun Bike” that can be helpful. It tells you where all the big rental shops are, the one you’re closest to, the rates, the bikes available and navigation to the rental locations. It also has a breadcrumb feature that lets you track the route you took, your GPS position in case you get lost or need help and an SOS function for when you need to be rescued. There are lots of hawkers near the pier, but I personally prefer the restaurants that you’ll find if you go further down, somewhere between the pier and Shisanhang Museum. There are quite a few there, and they look decent. I’ve been to Cafe de Flore (Chinese restaurant) and to My Burger. Both were OK. I wouldn’t mind going back to either. On the way to the museum, you’ll ride past some docks for fishing boats on the right. There are mangroves, crabs and mudskippers to look at there, which kids might enjoy. I think in some of the streets on the left, there are some old houses, probably from early in the last century. Some of them are abandoned and interesting to look at, too. Shisanhang Museum has lots of outdoor space to enjoy. There’s a grassy area to walk or let kids run on. The building really is one of the more interesting ones out there, so take time to go around it and explore it from the inside out and top to bottom. There are guided tours of the museum, in English as well. You should probably contact them in advance for the English tour. There aren’t so many things to look at inside the museum, which really feels like more of a way to commemorate the archeological dig that once took place there than a museum. On a techie note, this was the first episode in which I piloted a drone myself. It was a 3DR Solo and I was so impressed with how easy it was to fly! The stability is great and the software is amazing. It was my first time flying a drone, and we actually got lots of usable footage. Thank you 3DR for making my life easier, but pity you don’t have a distributor in Taiwan! UAV: 3DR http://www.3drobotics.com
