Info on episode 32: Cycling in Pingtung

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 32: Cycling in Pingdong2015-2016年「台灣好好玩」第三十二集: 屏東鐵馬之旅

Transcript
Today we’re cycling in Pingtung, and we’re going to visit the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park.
Pingtung has public bicycles that you can rent with a credit card or iPass. Today we’re riding on the first and so far the only bicycle path in Taiwan that runs under the freeway.
When the Hakkas immigrated to Taiwan from China, one group went to the north and one group came to the south. Around 1721, times were difficult, crime often broke out and looting was prevalent in this part of Taiwan. The Hakkas in the south formed six military camps to protect themselves. “Liudui" means “six camps.” The conflict eventually subsided, but the six villages in which Hakka people in the south lived came to be known as “Liudui.” this is Liudui Hakka Cultural Park.
Here at the cultural park, you can learn a lot about Hakka culture, including what Hakka people in southern Taiwan eat.
This is pork knuckles. Savory, spicy and garlic-y.
There are lots of really great displays here. This was a real tobacco barn, originally built 65 years ago. Lots of tobacco was produced here because the government gave price guarantees on tobacco, which makes good money to begin with.
In the park, rice paddies and tobacco fields are living displays and they cycle through them several times a year.
This is the “bagong,” or the earth god, a real earth god. When do people pray to him? Once in the morning and once at night. For what do people pray to him? Anything. “Bagong” is like everyone’s uncle, people pray to him like they do to their ancestors.
To be honest, this is my first time in Pingtung City and at the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park. We, just like 99% of everyone else, usually go straight to Kenting for the beach to go surfing. If you want to get to know Hakka culture and enjoy this wonderful cultural space, this is where you should come!
——————————
Michella's notes
You can budget half a day for Liudui if you’re just going to walk around. Or, you can buy some food from the food court there and enjoy the park, too. When it’s hot, there is an area in the far end of the park towards the left I think where you can soak your feet, heh heh. I think you can get guided tours in English, but you might have to make an appointment first.

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 31: Cycling in Chiayi

Transcript

Today we’re in Chiayi. The oysters here are really good!

Chiayi is in southern Taiwan, right at the Tropic of Cancer. We’re starting our day here, Zhe Cheng Cultural Park, an old sugar factory.

Let’s rent a bike, this is how we're going to get around today.

Most, if not all of the sugar factories in Taiwan were built during the Japanese occupation, between 1895 and 1945. This is no exception, so many of the buildings you see are very Japanese, including these houses, which are workers’ dormitories.

Chiayi County is a great place to travel. Some of the highest mountain peaks in Taiwan are in Chiayi, and at the same time it also borders the sea. Next we’re going to Dongshi Fisherman’s Wharf.

Those things sticking out of the water are oyster racks. Oyster farming is an important part of the economy here. Guess how they’re grown.

This is the shell of an oyster we had last night. A worker will drill a hole into this piece, and workers will put several of these on a line, then tie the line to a rack sitting in brackish water, or water that is a mix of fresh and sea water. Baby oysters will attach themselves to these and grow in clusters. Six months to a year later, they’re ready to eat. Let’s go get some oysters!

We’re having oysters six ways today. This is oyster pancake. This is a famous Taiwanese dish, you’ll find it everywhere in Taiwan.

These were stir fried in sesame oil. Delicious.

These were simply grilled. Simply tasty.

This is fried with meat and vegetables. Very filling.

I haven’t tasted oysters this good in a long, long time. They are just so fresh. They’re a little small compared to the ones you might find in other parts of the world, but this is the off season and who cares, they’re so good. The next time I come, I want to have the big ones, the ones as big as my hands. There will be a next time! And I’m really looking forward to it! You should come!

――――――――――

Michella's notes

The oysters here are small, but quite good because they’re so fresh. People still warn against eating them raw because the water might not be super clean. I had a couple and am still OK, but try at your own risk. Some of the restaurants aren’t open on Mondays, just be aware.

As for sugar farm, take time to walk around. You can spend a couple of hours there, taking a ride on the sugar cane train, walking around the neighborhood, checking out the old workers’ dormitories, which are Japanese style and built about a century ago. Cycling around there is nice too, especially going across the bridge that takes you out of the farm and towards the fisherman’s wharf. But it’s a long, long ride and might take a couple of hours each way. Bring snacks on the ride!

We stayed at Renyi Lake Hotel, and it’s new and clean. Would stay there again! Just be aware there’s a shooting range nearby, so it can get a little noisy during the day sometimes. We didn’t get a chance to, but taking a walk around the lake must be very nice.

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 30: Cycling in Houli

Transcript

One way to say “bicycle” in Chinese is “iron horse.” Today we’re going cycling in Taichung.

The Houfeng and Dongfeng bike trails used to be a railroad. The two trails put together are about 16 km long and take about 3 hours to complete roundtrip if you take a regular bike. We have to finish shooting before it rains, so we’re on electric bikes today.

This is the Houfeng section of the trail and I think it’s really interesting because there’s a bridge that you have to cross and it’s narrow, long and a bit scary if you stay on it too long. Really exciting. After the bridge you’ll come to a tunnel, again long, narrow and really cool.

This tunnel is 1200 meters long, it was built more than 100 years ago during the Japanese occupation. This tunnel is the first in Taiwan to be converted into a bicycle path. I think it’s quite cool.

A great way to repurpose obsolete railroads and tunnels, wouldn’t you say?

At the end of the Houfeng trail, you’ll come to Houli Horse Ranch, previously a military ranch.

This ranch was started during the Japanese occupation. Taiwan was a springboard into southeastern countries for Japan, and the Japanese government established and operated 10 military ranches in Taiwan - the was one of them.

Horses were bred and riders were trained here, when the time came, they were shipped off to war. The Japanese lost the war, and eventually 9 of the 10 ranches closed down. This is the last of them, now open to the public.

Houli Horse Ranch is like a big park. There are lots of old trees to enjoy and paths to walk. Occasionally you’ll see an old stable or building from the occupation. If you’re like me and like horses, you’re going to like it here.

Riding a horse is sort of like riding a bicycle. You only need to learn it once. I haven’t been on a horse in more than ten years, but it comes back to you with a bit of practice.

Houli and Fengyuan are a ways from downtown Taichung, and I never thought they can be so interesting. I knew that Houli is known for saxophones, but bike trails and this ranch too? Holy cow, Houli is fun! You should come!

――――――――――
Michella's notes

We mostly shot on the Houli portion of the path and it was quite beautiful! The bridge, the tunnel, and the way down to the ranch were all really nice. Would love to see what it’s like on the Fengyuan side sometime!

Info on episode 29: Cycling in Baihe

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 29: Cycling in Baihe
Transcript

Today we’re in Baihe, Tainan, which is famous for lotus farms.
Baihe is great for cycling. If you have an iPass or Easycard and a local mobile phone number, you can rent a public bicycle. If not, there are other bike rental shops around too.
There is a network of trails here, with the distance totaling tens of kilometers. The scenery here is peaceful and rural. You get to ride along rice paddies, lotus farms, irrigation channels, reservoirs, and lots of big, beautiful trees.

Come have a look. What do you think this is? These are old train tracks. There used to be a sugar mill around here. Baihe is mostly an agricultural town, in the plains, people produce rice and lotus seeds.

There was a period of time when lotus seeds didn’t sell well, so the townspeople thought, lotuses are beautiful to look at so why don’t we make a tourism industry out of it, too. They invited travelers, who’d stand by the side of the road and look at the lotuses, but it was unbearably hot because there were no trees to provide shade. Shade is bad for rice, that’s why. So people started planting trees along the road where there are lotus farms. These trees included kapok trees, which turned out to become another beautiful tourist attraction.
The stretch of kapok trees here is especially nice in March and April when the flowers bloom. In fact, some even say the kapoks make this one of the prettiest bike paths in the world. Pity we’re here now and not when it’s blooming!

Throughout the ride, you’ll see lots of Sanheyuan, which are traditional houses that you won't find in the city. Also there are lots of farm houses, some with an interesting twist. This is part of an ongoing community building project that is aiming to add a bit of art and youth back into the system.

Baihe reminds me of Chishang, Taitung because of the rice paddies and bike paths that allow you to ride through them. What’s cool about this one is the diversity in scenery, and the fact that not that may people know about this yet. Before it gets too crowded, you should come!

――――――――――
Michella's notes
I was really pleasantly surprised at how wonderful cycling in Baihe can be! The sights are beautiful - there are picturesque rice paddies, irrigation channels, reservoirs, lotus farms/ponds, an artistic rice farming village, sanheyuan’s (traditional Chinese houses)… This is a great place to ride, and there are lots of roads and paths so budget more time to spend here. Another thing that also stands out is the B&B where we stayed - Granduncle Home, which was recently built. The owner (“granduncle’s” son, actually) is also a guide that can show you all the best places and tell you the stories. I don’t think he speaks English, but if you follow him, I’m sure the ride will be a good one.

Info on episode 12: Cycling Guanshan, Taitung

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 12: Cycling Guanshan, Taitung

Transcript

We’re cycling in Guanshan today and getting a taste of their delicious rice.

I'm Michella. I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to row, cycle, and travel. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

This is Guanshan Train Station, and right outside the station, that way is a bike rental shop where I usually get my bike.
"How do you say “I want to rent a bike?” It’s “wo yao zu tie ma.”

This bike path goes around Guanshan, and it’s 12km long. It’s about as difficult as eating a piece of pie.

There are very few ups and downs, and the scenery along the way is fantastic. There is almost an ocean of rice paddies, several streams, and a big park with a lake in it.

This is a great place to watch birds and other wildlife.

Guanshan is a township within Taitung County, in southeastern Taiwan. The area is almost completely agricultural, and is well known for its rice, as you’ve probably guessed by now.

These rice stalks have started to bend because the grains inside have gotten big and and heavy. These are almost ready to be harvested. In Chinese, rice is described as being “humble,” because the more they mature, the deeper they bow.

Because you can probably count the number of factories here with one hand, the air and water in these parts are very clean. And because Guanshan is sandwiched between the central and coastal mountain ranges, which are not too far apart from each other, the soil is rich in minerals.

The mountains on the east and on the west side of Guanshan block out a lot of sunlight, so the rice takes a month longer than average to mature. All of these factors make a firmer and tastier rice.

During the Japanese occupation, between 1895 and 1945, rice from this area was shipped to Japan for the royal family to enjoy. You can say that this is rice fit for a king. It’s that good.

“Wan gong fan,” or “rice bowl” is what farmers used to eat in the fields. They would bring a bowl of rice, salty, greasy meat and vegetables in a basket, and then they would take it out at noon and have it for lunch.

At the “Rice School,” you can still get a taste of this very simple, local and delicious dish. The rice school is also a place where you can learn about how this staple food in Taiwan is processed.

This is “rough rice,” rice grains that have been dried. These are then sent through sieves that sift out debris, then they’re put between grinding stones, which loosen the hulls and leave us brown rice.

High in fiber content, brown rice is super healthy, but the texture sometimes is just too fibrous and most people don't like it, so usually brown rice is further milled until the bran layers come off. And voila, white rice. In Japan, people pickle vegetables with the hulls, salt and water.

Most rice that you'll find in Taiwan is of the medium length variety, originally from Japan. Compared to say, Indian or Thai rice, Japonica rice is firmer and stickier.

This is really healthy - brown rice. But unfortunately my husband hates it, even with some white rice mixed into it. But after I added black rice which kind of pops in your mouth when bite down on it, and some quinoa, and a little bit of buckwheat and pearl barley, he stopped complaining. Maybe he just gave up. But I like it.

I have a friend named “Show” who lives around here. Every day she posts pictures of the rice paddies with mountains and fog rolling down them in the background. And every day, I say to myself, “oh I want to go.” Well now I'm satisfied. Look at how the rice stalks sway in the wind like the waves in the ocean. You should come.

Michella's notes

Guanshan is a really nice place to ride your bike. It’s short, so if you’re going with kids and older folks who want to cycle, this is might be very suitable. The bike path is short, but there are a few excursions you can take, and if you stop to enjoy the scenery, it might take more than a morning or afternoon.

Guanshan Water Park when we were there was very empty, so if you want to feel like you have an entire park to yourself, come here. I thought it was a nice park with lots of grass and trees. Perhaps the reason it’s so empty is because the population here is just so little. There’s very little industry in Taitung, so for people who want higher paying jobs (especially young people), they go to Kaohsiung, Taichung or Taipei. The tradeoff for a lower income here is quality of life. A lot of people have moved to Taitung precisely so they can have a better quality of life, but they’re mostly people who have worked hard in the city for many, many years, or have had a decent income and some savings. It’s a really nice place to retire, that’s for sure. The headmaster of the Rice School runs a tech company in Taipei but started the Rice School so he can help the economy and share knowledge of how rice is planted, harvested and processed. He’s also working with farmers to help promote and add value to their products through education and R&D. There are a lot of people like this in Taitung and it’s always so nice to hear their stories.

The very friendly cat at Guanshan Water Park.

The Rice School was a lot of fun for me. The tour is very interactive. There are various DIY activities you can sign up for. We got to learn how rice is milled, feel with our own hands they look like at different stages of milling, what good they’re for at each stage and even got to use a Japanese supermarket mill to process brown rice to our own liking. That was fun. With that activity, they give you a rice bag that you can reuse for various things, like wine bottles (what the bag was actually originally designed for), other grains or anything else. You can even come back and buy more rice and carry it home in that bag. The bag is small, but it’s a good size. Coming back often to buy new rice keeps the stock low and what you put into your stomach fresh.

The rice bowl that we had at the Rice School was quite good, especially after several hours of shooting. Salty and greasy vegetables, meats, and delicious rice - it was guiltless heaven for us.

You can rent a bike at Guanshan’s Giant station, where I’m used to getting mine when I go, but they’re only open Friday to Sunday. Thankfully, the Rice School has a rental partner with high quality and dependable bikes.

My partner Charles makes everything seem so easy.

We stayed at a legally registered B&B called “Corner Home.” It’s nothing fancy but pretty clean and the host leaves us alone. I appreciate warm hosts, but after a long day of shooting, I prefer to be left alone most of the time. So I like Corner Home. I don't mind staying there again.

Come cycle in Guanshan. You’ll like it. You should come!

Oh there's a pizza place in Guanshan that was better than expected. I was so tired and hungry that day, I ended up buying too much of everything. Only had the sparkling chardonnay and pizza, the rest I took home to Taipei...

I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to row, cycle, and travel. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. Today we’re going to start at Dongshan Train Station, cycle along Dongshan River to Dongshan Water Park, then take a boat to the Center for Traditional Arts where you can get a glimpse of what life and culture in Taiwan was like in the last century. But first we need a bike. It might sound counterintuitive, but I think you should slow down so you don’t miss the scenery. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see crews rowing up and down the river. This is where the national rowing team and local crews train. How envious that the don't have to worry about fishing boats, yachts and dredging barges like we did in southern California. Yilan is in northeastern Taiwan, separated from the greater Taipei area by mountains. So as one story goes, a long, long time ago before the government and law enforcement made their way here, this was a pirate hangout. The other people that lived here were the Kavalans, and indigenous tribe. Dongshan River and its resources attracted early settlers. Now its bicycle paths attract travelers. The ferry ride to the Center for Traditional Arts is NT$75 and about 15 minutes long. The Center for Traditional Arts is a fun place and nostalgic for some people too. In addition to looking at traditional architecture, you can also see how craftsmen make things like calligraphy brushes, dragon beard candy, tops that spin, those kinds of things. This is a restored san he yuan, a traditional house that usually faces south. Oftentimes there's a pond in front of san he yuan's. The pond is not only decorative, but serves a function as well. When the summer wind blows from the south and the air passes over the pond before it enters the house, it gets cooled down by the moisture. Natural air conditioning! There are rooms on three sides of the san he yuan, and in the middle is a courtyard. Behind the courtyard, right in the center is the main hall. This is where ancestors and gods are worshipped, and where important guests are received. The kitchen is on the east side, so the sunlight can shine through early in the morning when breakfast is prepared. The bathroom, which had no plumbing in the old days, is to the west, to keep the stench and germs as far away from the kitchen as possible. The head of the household lives right by the main hall, which is close to the center of the house, and this symbolizes the center of power. The sons live on the east and on the west wings. What I find especially interesting is the relationship between the sisters in law in Taiwanese is called dang sai a, which literally means east and west. I like the Dongshan River area. It’s fun and it brings back a lot of nice memories for me. In college I was on the rowing team, where I very like spent more time and energy, rather than on my studies. But I think I turned out OK. But anyway and coming here and riding along the river, watching the calm, glassy surface is just so peaceful and soothing. Maybe I should just picnic here next time. That would be nice. You should come! The path along Dongshan River is beautiful. I remember seeing at least one old bridge and it was quite nice. Because you have to return the bike where you borrow it (at least that was the case when we were there), I think it’s better if you spend a day cycling around and have a picnic, or hang out at Dongshan River Park (which has pools and water slides in the summer), and budget a whole other day for National Center for Traditional Arts. You can also move the park itinerary to the second day too. The ferry ride to CTA is nice. The boat is really cool as it’s not only solar powered, the height of the roof on the boat is also adjustable, and it comes down before passing under the bridge. We rented a bike from a shop across the street from Dongshan Station. They have a good variety of bikes, including tandem, kids, electric and electric power assist bikes. I got a Giant power assist bike and Charles my partner got a Giant electric bike. Look at all the stuff we have on us! This kind of reminds me of the Indian military motorcycle acrobatics show. We ate at 小可愛米粉羹 a couple of times. We had the thick noodle soup and the fried tofu skewers. They were pretty good! UAV: 3DR Solo http://www.3drobotics.com

Transcript

This is Dongshan River in Yilan and I want to show you what you can do around here on a bicycle.

I'm Michella. I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to row, cycle, and travel. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Today we’re going to start at Dongshan Train Station, cycle along Dongshan River to Dongshan Water Park, then take a boat to the Center for Traditional Arts where you can get a glimpse of what life and culture in Taiwan was like in the last century.

But first we need a bike. You can rent one right outside the station.

There are bike paths on both banks of the river, and it’s a really easy ride.

From the train station to the Dongshan River water park, it's about 3 km. It might sound counterintuitive, but I think you should slow down so you don’t miss the scenery. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see crews rowing up and down the river.

We ate at 小可愛米粉羹 a couple of times. We had the thick noodle soup and the fried tofu skewers. They were pretty good!

You should come!
