Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 14: Taking the Taiwan Tour Bus to Taroko National Park2015-2016年「台灣好好玩」第十四集: 搭觀巴到太魯閣Transcript 文字稿:Today I’m taking you to Taroko National Park in Hualien today and to see one of the top ten sites of Taiwan. I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to try new things, play with new toys, and visit old places in a new way. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. Getting to Hualien is easy. I usually take a train from Taipei, and the ride is about two hours. Moving around Taroko is slightly trickier, but the Taiwan Tour Bus Taroko Gorge Tour makes it simple. They’ll pick you up at Hualien Station or your hotel and drive you around in a van with wifi and a tablet that will tell you what you’re looking at in four different languages, including English. Bruwan Plateau is a large downstream river terrace on Liwu River. It used to be inhabited by the Truku people. We're on the eastern coast of Taiwan. That’s the Coastal Mountain Range, and behind me over there is Cingshui Cliff, one of the top ten sites of Taiwan. The 100m or about 33 story plunge into the ocean is nearly straight down so it’s majestic and a little terrifying at the same time, but definitely breathtaking. If you follow that road down there, you’ll find yourself back in Taipei, eventually. Proportionally, Taiwan has a lot of national parks. In fact, they make up 8.6% of total land area, which is a higher percentage than that of the US or Canada. This is Taroko National Park, which covers about 92,000 hectares, or 355 square miles. New York City is about 305. Much of Taroko National Park is above 2,000 meters, some of it is even above 3,000 meters. What that means is, when it gets cold enough, sometimes we get snow. And that’s really special because Taiwan is in the subtropics. We eat mango all year round, and even in November, we can get 30 degree Celcius temperature. It’s quite amazing. This is Swallow Grotto, where in the spring and summer, swallows come and enjoy a mid air buffet of insects that are carried up by rising air currents. In the wall of the cliffs you see over there are tiny little holes. Those holes are where underground water used to come out. And there are also larger recesses, that indicates where the water level once was. The recesses are caused by water erosion. All of that there, that’s marble. One of the most popular trails here is this one, the Sakadang Trail. Here you can get really, really close to the riverbed of the Sakadang tributary. So what does “Sakadang” mean? It means “wisdom teeth.” Story has it, a long, long time ago, when a group of indigenous people came through, they found somebody’s wisdom teeth and they decided to name the place after their discovery. Sakadang, wisdom teeth! We’re learning a new language! This trail is 1.5km long, and quite easy to walk. The views along the way are sapphire blue water and rocks with marbling patterns that go in a horizontal, vertical, diagonal and sometimes even a wavy orientation. The water here is a strong bluish-green because of the marble and limestone that are dissolved in it. The water is really clean, but don’t drink from it, it has too many minerals. The name “Taroko” comes from the indigenous tribe Truku, who used to live here. “Truku" means something like “plateau in the mountains where you can live and watch for enemies.” This is Bruwan, once the home of the Truku people. “Bruwan” in Truku means “echo,” which you can hear when it's quiet. 布洛灣是「回音」的意思,安靜的時候聽得到喔~This is a nice place for families with kids to stay. There’s lots of open space to run around in, and there are activities that kids might like. For example, in each room there is a mission list, and if you complete all the missions, you get a prize. What kind of food does a firefly larva eat? Hint: see sign at the Bamboo Groves trail. I think this is kind of fun. So this is for kids. And for adults, you have to remember how to say "hello" in Truku, otherwise no breakfast for you. Biyaxsu! (Hi, how are you?) Biyaxku! (I’m fine, how are you?) Traditionally, Truku men and women have bands of tattoos on their faces when they come of age. But before they get their tattoos, women have to pass a weaving test, and men have to prove themselves by beheading an enemy. This tradition stopped long ago, and there are only two people with these tattoos still alive today. There are a few hotels in Taroko, some luxurious, some really basic. This one is in between, and I like it because it has its charms. The manager, who is of Chinese descent, prides himself in running an all local Truku staff, and giving the kids a chance to help pay the bills at home and for their tuition. He knows how each of the kids are doing in school, who's in a choir, who’s on the basketball team, who doesn't do their homework, who is trying to get into the police academy, what the situation at home is…and seems to truly care for them. It’s heartwarming. Culturally, it also gives the performers a chance to practice and pass down traditional songs and dances. Some people say that the most beautiful thing in Taiwan is its people. I might have to agree with this one. But Taroko comes in a close second. You should come. Oh where are those pictures I took with my Canon 6D? I think I deleted them, ack!! I recently started putting more effort into photography again and I’m making progress but forgetting to import the photos into the computer before formatting the card for the next shoot really doesn’t help… To me, Hualien is all about big, impressive views - ocean waves smashing into impressive cliffs, Grand Canyon-ish landscape inside Taroko National Park - that kind of thing. Those views are great, and if you haven’t seen them yet, do that first. There are a lot of trails to walk as well. I’ve been to Hualien quite a few times now and my biggest discovery this time was the Leader Village Hotel, which really isn’t fancy but I do fancy it, especially the big grassy area that the cabins are placed around. I wrote the episode sitting on the patio area outside my room facing the big, open field of green on the ground and blue in the sky. It was quite nice. It reminds me of camping. The hotel has games for visitors to play, including learning a couple of words in Truku (like “hello”) or running around looking for specific objects that allow you to learn about the culture or environment there. Kids and curious adults would enjoy it, I think. The food is OK, but left me wishing for something better. The fun part of dinner was the staff parade through the cafeteria and wild boar BBQ, but there wasn’t much else to look forward to. Despite the underwhelming meal, overall the hotel is OK. I wouldn’t mind going again with friends and family who enjoy sitting around and chatting over tea and snacks, reading, or doing nothing at all. The Taiwan Tour Bus on this route that met us on that day was a small bus, kind of old, but the driver was welcoming. I imagine that Taiwan Tour Buses are good for making new friends, because you spend so much time with each other on the bus/van. I remember a few time when I traveled with the press corps, no one really knew each other in the beginning, but after the trip was over, we’d still get together once in a while to catch up. It’s a really nice feeling. Seats on the Puyuma run out very quickly, so make sure to buy your tickets in advance. You should come! UAV: 3DR Solo http://www.3drobotics.com

Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 14: Taking the Taiwan Tour Bus to Taroko National Park

Transcript

Today I’m taking you to Taroko National Park in Hualien today and to see one of the top ten sites of Taiwan.

I'm Michella.

Bruwan Plateau is a large downstream river terrace on Liwu River. It used to be inhabited by the Truku people.

Michella's notes

Oh where are those pictures I took with my Canon 6D? I think I deleted them, ack!! I recently started putting more effort into photography again and I’m making progress but forgetting to import the photos into the computer before formatting the card for the next shoot really doesn’t help... So what you're getting and what you've been getting are shaky snapshots that I took while we were location scouting.
